Paris

Paris, the French capital, is significant as the stage of Napoleon's two marriages, his rise to power, and his coronation. It is also the city where he became famous, after he helped put a stop to the Royalist rebellion in 1795. Then, on March 9, 1796, Napoleon married Josephine de Beauharnais in Paris. In 1799, he led a coup d'etat and became First Consul. Later, in 1804, Napoleon was crowned emperor of France in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. After he divorced Josephine, Napoleon married Marie-Louise of Austria on April 2, 1910 with the hope of producing an heir to the throne. Marie-Louise gave birth to Napoleon's first and only child, Napoleon II.
